Project Overview:
This original canvas painting captures a jellyfish drifting through ocean water. Painted on a 30" x 38" stretched canvas, the piece contrasts heavy, textured palette strokes with soft, blended gradients to create a sense of natural movement and underwater light.

Design & Process:
Building the Underwater Atmosphere:
The painting started with a rich, dark underpainting to establish the depth of the ocean. Dark navy and midnight blues anchor the bottom and edges, while brighter cobalt and aqua streaks cut across the midground to mimic shifting ocean currents and filtered surface light.
Layering Structure and Movement:
The jellyfish was blocked out first with loose, structural strokes to determine the flow of the tentacles. From there, the composition developed in stages:
- The Base Form: Initial golden-yellow and bright cyan outline to map the bell and the primary trailing lines across the canvas.
- Textured Tentacles: Short, thick impasto strokes layered coral, blush pink, and warm salmon tones over the cool background. This deliberate color contrast pulls the jellyfish forward and gives the trailing tentacles weight and dimension.
- The Translucent Bell: Thin glazes and soft white curved sweeps define the dome-shaped bell, showing the cool water through the creature's semi-transparent body.
- Fine Details: Whisps of thin, flowing tendrils trail through the currents, accented by flecks of light and glowing particles drifting below.
The Finished Piece:
The finished 30" x 38" canvas provides an eye-catching focal point for a living room, entryway, or bedroom, bringing coastal nature and vivid color into the room.
